TORONTO - The Special Investigations Unit says two Toronto police officers were not to blame in the death of a man they apprehended and took to hospital.
The SIU says the officers apprehended 43-year-old Pasqualino DePaolis under the Mental Health Act last September after he was seen yelling at passing cars.
DePaolis had injuries and officers called an ambulance.
When he went into medical distress and the ambulance had not arrived, police took him to hospital where he later died.
The SIU says an autopsy report concluded DePaolis's injuries were superficial and that he died of "cocaine intoxication in a man with acute psychosis."
Agency director Ian Scott says police were justified in apprehending DePaolis and there's no evidence he was mistreated by the officers.
