MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- A police chase early today that resulted in the death of a motorist has prompted a call to the province's Special Investigations Unit.
The SIU says about 12:25 a.m., an Essex County OPP officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver failed to stop and a pursuit began.
After a short chase, the vehicle crashed southeast of Windsor, on Manning Rd. at County Rd. 46 north of Highway 401.
The unidentified male from Essex County was ejected from vehicle and pronounced dead in hospital.
The SIU has assigned three investigators, three forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to probe the incident.
The provincial agency is summoned whenever police activity results in death or serious injuries.
