There were some tense moments on Highway 401 near Pickering on Wednesday afternoon as the driver of a stolen van fled police and drove the wrong way on the busy highway.
Ontario Provincial Police say the suspect initially stopped when pulled over by Const. John Hominski, but the man then drove away as the officer approached.
"The officer went to catch up to the vehicle a second time, and the Caravan driver intentionally rammed the OPP vehicle twice," Sgt. Cam Woolley told CTV Toronto.
At one point, the driver of the stolen van got onto Highway 401 but was driving east in the westbound lanes.
Police said it was a miracle other motorists weren't injured.
The pursuit continued through residential streets until the van came to a stop at a townhouse complex on Bayly Avenue.
The suspect, a man in his 20s, and a 17-year-old female passenger, then fled on foot. Officers found the girl a short time later and placed her under arrest. She can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The driver wasn't immediately found, but police expected to catch the suspect because he left behind his wallet with photo identification inside the van.
The officer involved in the pursuit was not hurt, Woolley said.
