Peel Regional Police said Friday that it is investigating five of its officers involved in a 2009 drug bust.
Staff Sergeant Taufic Saliba said Chief Mike Metcalf called for its Professional Standards Bureau to investigate the officers involved in the September 2009 incident, where police arrested and charged two men with several drug-related offences in relation to a quantity of cocaine.
Two years later, Justice J. Baltman of the Superior Court of Justice in Brampton delivered a ruling that brought into question evidence given during the preliminary hearing by the five members. The contents of the ruling were subject to a court-imposed publication ban.
On Thursday, one of the accused pleaded guilty to possession for the purpose of trafficking, lifting the publication ban.
Staff Sgt. Saliba could not provide further comment on the case "pending the result of that investigation."
However, Chief Metcalfe said in a press release that: "The men and women of Peel Regional Police are committed to providing professional and ethical service to citizens. It is paramount that we maintain the confidence of the community that we serve. Allegations made against members of this service are taken seriously and will be investigated thoroughly."
The officers remain on active duty pending the completion of the internal investigation.
