A Markham neighbourhood is reeling after a mother struck and killed her two-year-old boy with her car early Monday evening.
York Regional Police were called to the home on Bushberry Court, near Kennedy Road and 16th Avenue, shortly before 6 p.m.
The boy's mother had been backing out of the garage when she struck the child.
"The mother didn't even know the child was there," Sgt. Gary Phillips told CTV News Tuesday. "This is a tragedy."
The home remained cordoned off by yellow police tape Tuesday. Neighbours were still shocked by the tragic accident that shattered the calm of the quiet street a day earlier.
“Nothing has happened in this neighbourhood like that,” neighbour Matt Roma said. “It’s sad.”
Frank George said he had met the family a couple of times, and that they were “very nice.”
“It’s very horrible,” he said Tuesday.
The York Regional police force's reconstruction team was investigating Monday night, but no charges are expected to be laid.
Police are not releasing the child's name.
