BELLEVILLE, Ont. - A man is recovering in hospital in stable condition after being shot in the stomach during a violent carjacking near Belleville, Ont., this morning.
Police say two vehicles pulled over to the shoulder of Highway 401 around 6:30 a.m., and the occupant of one of the vehicles was shot and left on the side of the road.
His vehicle, a 2004 Ford Taurus with a Quebec licence plate, was stolen, and police are still looking for it as well as the other vehicle, which hasn't been identified.
The westbound lanes of the highway west of Belleville were shut down for several hours for investigation, but have since reopened.
Provincial police Const. Randy Green says they do not yet have any suspects in custody and are seeking assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the crime.
