The man charged in the murder of a 23-year-old York University student was remanded during a brief court appearance on Tuesday, and his lawyer announced he will plead not guilty.
Brian Dickson, 29, appeared in court on Tuesday by a video link but did not enter a formal plea. He is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Qian Liu, a 23-year-old Chinese visa student.
"Every person is presumed to be innocent. There's a whole jump between an officer having reasonable and probable grounds and proof beyond a reasonable doubt," said Dickson's lawyer, Robert Nutall.
Nutall said he received disclosure from the Crown, which includes 4,000 pages of information on the case.
Liu was found dead, naked from her waist down, in her apartment near York University on April 15.
The cause of Liu's death has still not been released and there were no obvious signs of trauma when she was found.
The student's death made headlines around the world. It came to be known as the "webcam murder" after police said Liu's boyfriend witnessed part of the attack over his computer from China.
Liu's relatives in China have hired a law student to keep them up to date with Dickson's court proceedings.
Dickson is expected to return to court on August 16.
