The man charged in the murder of a 23-year-old York University student made a court appearance by video link on Tuesday, but did not enter his plea as expected.
Brian Dickson's lawyer said his client, who was expected to plead not guilty, is still waiting for the Crown to present the evidence against him.
Chinese visa student Qian Liu was found dead, naked from her waist down, in her apartment near York University on April 15. For days it was deemed a suspicious death, but then Dickson was charged with murder.
Dickson appeared by video link wearing an orange prison jumpsuit. Outside the Scarborough courthouse on Tuesday, lawyer Rob Nuttall said police are yet to present their case to the courts.
"They'll give it to me as soon as they have it and then I can start making some decisions as to where to go from there," said Nuttall, who began representing Dickson after his last court appearance.
The cause of Liu's death has still not been released and there were no obvious signs of trauma when she was found.
The student's death made headlines around the world. It came to be known as the "webcam murder" after police said Liu's boyfriend witnessed part of the attack over his computer from China. Dickson's lawyer called the webcam aspect interesting.
"How it will play in at the end of the day, I don't know," he said. "I've got to stay focused on where my defences may or may not be and what the evidentiary value of that will be at the end of the day."
Dickson is set to appear in court again in June. His lawyer said they will wait until they see the Crown's evidence before deciding whether to ask for bail.
