The only female giant panda in Canada celebrated its eighth birthday with a bamboo cake fit for a bear.
Er Shun was treated to an Alice in Wonderland themed cake, complete with playing cards, mushrooms and a giant top hat.
The cake, made of bamboo, biscuits and fruit with a cardboard base, was quickly pulled apart by the hungry panda.
The black-and-white bear is one of two pandas on loan from China to Canada for 10 years. Er Shun and Da Mao will stay at the Toronto Zoo until 2018, when they will be moved to Calgary for a five-year stay.
However, Er Shun's time in Canada could be extended past the 10-year limit, should the bear get pregnant.
Any offspring conceived will remain in Canada, and the mother and cub have to be together for two years before it can be weaned.
Zoo officials said the bear underwent an artificial insemination procedure in mid-May. Giant pandas' gestation periods can last anywhere from 87 to 186 days from insemination, and the zoo will not know whether the bear is expecting until approximately 20 days before she gives birth.
Er Shun was also artificially inseminated in April 2014, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
