A man charged in the murder of a 23-year-old Winnipeg woman was remanded in custody on Saturday.
Joseph Beauregard, 31, of Whitby, Ont. made a brief appearance in a Toronto court on Saturday morning.
While in court the man pulled up his pant legs and shirt sleeves alleging he was mistreated by officers.
He is due back in court Thursday.
Beauregard, along with another man, is charged with first-degree murder in the November death of Leanne Freeman, who was found dying in the Port Lands on Nov. 29.
Police allege Beauregard knew Freeman for a short time before her death and believe her death was unrelated to her work in the sex trade.
Last week, investigators said they recovered Freeman's clothing and other personal belongings from a commercial dumpster on Kingston Road, about a 20-minute drive from where she was found.
Freeman's brother Tim and friend Robin Brideau were in court Saturday hoping for answers that led to the end of the short and troubled life of the woman.
"I want to know why it happened. Why you do something like that to somebody?" Tim Freeman said.
He said that in the past year, his sister feared for her life.
"She said if she came up to Toronto she thought she was going to die," Freeman said.
Another man, John Ash, 23, has been charged with accessory to murder after the fact, and is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on Dec. 22.
Friends expressed shock over Ash's arrest on Freeman's Facebook page.
"He even had the nerve to post in this group and on her Facebook wall that this should have never happened…" one friend wrote.
While another wrote "honestly he knew a lot of us and he was her friend…".
