Police have made two arrests in the murder of 23-year-old Leanne Freeman, a Winnipeg woman found dying in the Port Lands on Nov. 29.
Whitby resident Joseph Beauregard, 31, has been arrested and will be charged with first-degree murder, police say. He is expected to appear at the Old City Hall courthouse on Saturday morning.
John Ash, 23, has been charged with accessory to murder after the fact and will appear at College Park courthouse on Thursday.
In a news conference on Friday, police alleged Beauregard knew Freeman for a short time before her death. Police also said they are still continuing their investigation.
Last week, investigators said they recovered Freeman's clothing and other personal belongings from a commercial dumpster on Kingston Road, about a 20-minute drive from where she was found. The items were first discovered by a business owner and reported to police.
At that time, police said they believed her death was unrelated to her work in the sex trade. Det-Sgt. Brian Borg described Freeman as transient, not homeless.
