The number of shooting victims in Toronto are up over 82 per cent so far this year than in 2014, according to statistics released by police.
As of June 9 2015, there have been 133 shooting victims in Toronto compared to 73 in 2014. Out of the 133 victims, 66 were uninjured.
A victim is classified by police as anyone who has been shot or shot at. Out of the victims in 2015, nine of those were killed and 58 were injured.
The number of shooting occurrences is also up 32 per cent so far in 2015. As of June 9, there have been 99 shooting occurrences, compared to 75 in 2014.
Overall, the number homicides in Toronto are up by two so far this year. Nine of those victims were shot, eight stabbed and five were “other.”
At year end of 2014, there were a total of 196 shooting victims in Toronto. Of those, 27 were killed.
Homicides in Toronto have continued to rise gradually since 2011. In 2011, there were 51 homicides and in 2014 there were 57.
During the so-called "year of the gun" in 2005, firearms were used in 52 of 80 murders during the year.
Toronto police have released a map of where the shooting have occurred across the city in 2015.
