One person has died and four others have been rushed to hospital after a car mounted a sidewalk in North York and hit a group of pedestrians.

The crash happened on Yonge Street, north of Sheppard Avenue, at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Thursday.

Police say a taxi cab and car that was travelling eastbound on Park Home Avenue collided. The car then struck four pedestrians, before driving into a parking lot and hitting two parked vehicles, including a black Porsche.

Police say a man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other people, including a female driver and three male pedestrians, were transported to a local hospital. Police say two of those injured were in serious condition.

Bystanders who witnessed the afternoon crash say the impact of the collision knocked the pedestrians’ shoes off their feet.

"The impact, they just flew," Alka Shwarma, who was heading to the gym when she saw the car drive through the intersection. "It was just so sad."

Yonge Street was temporarily closed between Empress and Elmwood Avenues as police investigated the crash.
