TORONTO -- Two people are dead following a house fire in Georgetown, Ont. on Wednesday morning.
Emergency crews were called to a residence on Hidden Lake Trail, near 8 Line and 10 Side Road, around 5:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a fire.
“Upon police arrival, the home was fully engulfed in flames,” Halton police said in a news release issued Wednesday afternoon. “Tragically, two deceased persons have been located inside the home.”
Officials have not identified the victims.
Speaking to CTV News Toronto on Wednesday, neighbours said a couple, identified as Krystyna and Andrew Rerak, lived inside the home.
Andrew and Asha Witek, who live nearby, said they all came to Canada from the same city in Poland.
“Hard working people, very ambition, very nice,” Asha Witek said. “It’s really hard. We were very close with them.”
The Ontario Fire Marshall has been contacted to assist with the investigation.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
Roads in the area have been closed while the investigation is conducted.
