A serious tractor-trailer collision on Highway 401 in Ajax closed all eastbound lanes for hours Tuesday afternoon, causing commuter headaches for the evening commute.

The Ontario Provincial Police urged motorists travelling to Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and further east to take an alternate route following the early-afternoon crash.

All eastbound lanes of the highway between Westney and Salem Roads were closed for some time. Two lanes reopened by 3:30 p.m., and all lanes reopened a short while later.

Const. Dave Woodford said the tractor-trailer rear-ended a Volkswagen Jetta and an empty horse trailer. Other vehicles were also involved in the crash.

The driver of the rig was trapped until rescue crews were able to free him. He had problems breathing and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The occupants of the other vehicles were not seriously hurt.

Some hay spilled onto the highway after the collision with the horse trailer.

Police are not yet sure what caused the crash, but there was roadwork being done in the area.
