The province's Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 42-year-old man was shot and killed after a fight with a police officer in Toronto early Saturday morning.
The SIU says a Toronto police officer was on patrol when he heard an alarm sound at Solarski Pharmacy, on Roncesvalles Avenue north of Queen Street West, at about 3:50 a.m.
The officer entered the building, where he became involved in a confrontation with a man. A shot was fired from the officer's gun and the man was wounded and died at St. Michael's Hospital, the SIU said.
The man's name has not been released. The SIU is looking into why the officer's gun was discharged. They wouldn't say if the man was armed.
SIU forensic investigators taped off the intersection at Roncesvalles and Garden Avenue to collect evidence at the scene.
"It's very scary to have it happen in our neighbourhood," said Alyssa Pell, who works in the neighbourhood. "It's the kind of thing you never think happens right next door, but obviously it does."
Nash Dama, who works at Evergreen Natural Foods, said his windows have been broken several times.
The SIU, a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries and deaths involving police, is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them at 416-622-1925.
