TORONTO - A 16-year-old boy faces nine criminal charges after shots were fired from a moving vehicle on Highway 401.

Police say drivers reported being shot at on Sunday afternoon in the westbound lanes of the highway just west of Pickering.

Witnesses told police a young man was firing what appeared to be an assault rifle from the passenger window of a pickup truck.

All available provincial police units and a Toronto police swat team raced to the scene and quickly located the suspect vehicle.

Officers determined that the weapon was a paint-ball gun designed to closely resemble an assault rifle.

Charges against the 16-year old suspect include mischief endangering life, assault with a weapon, and weapons dangerous to the public.
