TORONTO - A group of protesters is spending the Easter weekend on a 119-kilometre march to protest plans to build a quarry north of Toronto.

The protesters say the quarry planned for a site on Highway 124 near Shelburne would destroy prime farmland in Ontario's potato-growing region.

They also say they're worried about damage to water tables in the vicinity.

The group is made up of local residents, farmers and members of First Nations.

The protesters say they reached the halfway mark of their march Sunday morning and intend to wrap up their trek Tuesday with a rally at a farm next to the proposed site.

Highland Companies, backed by a Boston hedge fund, has said any part of the 971-hectare site that's been dug up will be replaced and returned to an arable state.

The Ontario government still must approve plans for the quarry.
