Police in Peel and Durham regions believe two armed carjackings that took place within hours of each other Tuesday morning are connected.

The first carjacking took place in Peel region just before 6 a.m. when a 67-year-old woman was forced out of her car by an armed gunman.

She was backing her red 2002 Dodge Caravan out of her garage when a suspect smashed the driver's side window. The woman was forced out of the car and pushed to the ground at gunpoint.

Her husband, who was waiting for her at the bottom of the driveway, was being held back by another armed gunman.

The two suspects jumped into the van and drove off.

At around 9:30 a.m. a mail carrier in Durham region called police to report that his personal car was stolen by a couple of armed gunmen driving a red van.

The 54-year-old told police that he had just parked his car on the street when a passenger van, with two masked suspects inside, pulled up beside him.

One suspect got out of the driver's side and allegedly ordered the mail carrier to lie face down in the snow while pointing a handgun to his face.

In the meantime, a second suspect then got out of the van and got into the mail carrier's car, described as a 2003 four-door silver Honda Civic.

The Canada Post employee said there was one bag of mail destined for Oshawa inside the car at the time it was stolen.

Each suspect drove off with a vehicle.

Police believe the van is the same vehicle that was stolen earlier in the morning from Peel region.

Detectives are also investigating whether the carjackings are connected to a violent crime spree over the weekend that started when a man was shot in the head by a suspect who then stole his car.

Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for both cars that were stolen Tuesday.

The Dodge Caravan's licence plate is ATAZ 198 and the Civic's plate number is AZYX 738.

The public should not approach the vehicles or the suspects but should call 911 immediately.
