Peel homicide detectives are investigating the region's 13th and 14th homicides of the year after two fatal shootings on Monday night.
Officers were called to a Brampton home on Woodsend Run, near Mavis Road and Highway 407, at about 11:20 p.m. after several shots were fired at a house party.
When police arrived, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Glenford Asan Reid, 31, of Brampton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other victim, a 37-year-old Toronto man, was taken to hospital and is expected to survive.
The deadly altercation had spilled out onto the front yard and street, police said.
"Because it was a house party, there are several witnesses that need to be interviewed," Const. Samantha Nulle told reporters. "It is going to take some time to get through them."
Neighbours said more than 100 people were at the party, and they fled and ducked behind parked cars after the shots rang out.
"I'm very scared because I thought this was a very peaceful neighbourhood and nothing like this has happened before," said one female resident.
"I couldn't believe it, I couldn't believe it," said one man.
In a separate incident, about 30 minutes later, shots were fired inside a Malton apartment building.
Heavily armed tactical officers searched the building on Darcel Avenue, near Highway 427 and Finch Avenue, and sealed off the area.
Detectives found a man shot to death in one of the apartment units. He has been identified as 28-year-old Orrin Marlon Earle of Mississauga.
Police don't believe the two shootings are connected.
Investigators haven't commented on the possible motives or released suspect descriptions.
Officers were going door-to-door on Tuesday in search of witnesses to both crimes.
