Several Toronto officers were hurt in a police chase early Saturday morning when their cruisers were rammed repeatedly by a suspected car thief.

Police were called to the parking lot of a car dealership near Keele Street and Highway 401 at about 2:45 a.m. for a report of suspicious activity in the parking lot.

Several cruisers arrived a short time later. When one officer reached into the driver's side window of the vehicle the suspected thief was sitting in, the man began driving away, police said.

The officer was dragged several metres, but suffered only minor injuries.

Police cruisers gave chase, following the vehicle south along Keele and then onto Highway 401. As officers were boxing in the suspect, he began ramming the cruisers repeatedly, police said.

The chase ended on the eastbound collector lanes between Keele and Dufferin Street. Three of the cruisers are write-offs, police said.

Police said three more officers were hurt during the collisions and the brief struggle that ensued, but they were not seriously hurt.

Police closed the section of highway for several hours to clean up the damaged vehicles.

The suspect faces a number of charges, including dangerous driving, assaulting a police officer and possession of stolen property.
