One man is in custody following an early-morning police chase where a Toronto officer fired a shot at the fleeing vehicle.

The officer was directing traffic at a construction zone at Keele Street and St. Clair Avenue at about 5 a.m. on Tuesday when a motorist almost ran him over, police said.

Police cruisers caught up with the motorist a short time later, but the driver sped away. The chase reached speeds of 80 km/h before the fleeing driver crashed into a police car on Gunns Road. A TTC crew working nearby was almost run down in the pursuit.

An officer fired one shot at the suspect's car because the man was still trying to get away, police said. Officers were able to subdue the suspect.

No one was hit by the bullet or hurt in the accident, police said.

A 54-year-old man was taken into custody and faces various charges. Police said alcohol was a factor in the incident.
