An elderly man is dead after a fire broke out at a North York home on Sunday.

Capt. David Eckerman said a caller reported seeing smoke coming from the back of a home in the area of Wilson Avenue and Allen Road. It was upgraded to a second-alarm fire shortly before 3:45 p.m.

The man, who was in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene, paramedics said. His body was pulled from the home's basement.

A woman in her 30s also suffered minor injuries but was not transported to hospital, paramedics said. Neighbours told CTV Toronto she was a tenant in the home.

The investigation is still in the early stages, but fire officials said they believe there may have been a flash fire in the basement.

"The gentleman was in the basement," Division Cmdr. Bob O’Hallarn told reporters at the scene.

"Not sure what was going on but we think (the fire) may have flashed over, meaning a lot of heat builds up in the basement and then all of the materials that are combustible give off a gas which suddenly bursts into flames."

Fire officials said it appears the combustible materials that were in the basement were regular household items.
