An east-end Toronto apartment building is still too unsafe for its inhabitants, emergency officials said Tuesday morning.
Residents of 2 Secord Ave., who were evacuated Sunday after an underground hydro vault exploded, were supposed to be able to return for at least a few minutes to gather belongings, identification and their pets. However, no one has been allowed to enter the premises and won't be allowed to do for another two days.
The building, located in the Dawes Road and Danforth Avenue area, has been without electricity or water since the explosion.
The fire spread soot and debris throughout the property. Further testing is being done to determine whether it is safe for residents to return, fire officials said.
In the meantime, displaced tenants are doing what they can to make alternate arrangements for shelter. A handful of people spent another night sleeping in cots inside a nearby elementary school.
Others found shelter with friends, family or received assistance from Toronto social services.
About 60 pets have been recovered so far there are still more inside the building. Anyone who has a pet that needs to be rescued should contact the Humane Society.
People who are taking medication are being advised to go to the pharmacy for a refill, especially if medicine bottles were left open or had to be refrigerated.
The property managers said Tuesday tenants will be reimbursed their rent for August and the rest of July.
Tenants of the building can also check the City of Toronto website for further information.
