Police have made an arrest in connection with a stabbing incident at a Mississauga high school that sent a 17-year-old student rushing to hospital Monday.
Peel Regional Police said Monday in a news release they identified and then arrested a 17-year-old male, charging the suspect with aggravated assault, breach of probation and breach of recognizance.
He will appear in a Brampton court on Tuesday for a bail hearing. Due to provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the suspect cannot be named.
The stabbing victim is in stable condition in hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Police say a Grade 12 student got into a fight inside Thomas L. Kennedy Secondary School, located in the Dundas and Hurontario Streets area, at around 10 a.m. They suspect the incident might be related to a confrontation from last week.
The injured person spoke to several students after he was stabbed and showed them a large gash on his arm.
"He was standing by himself and he lifts up his shirt and there's a wound and blood just begins pouring on the ground," one student told CTV Toronto. "He said, 'Oh my God, oh my God, I think I'm losing too much blood."
Another student said the victim had a hole in his arm the size of a golf ball. "You could see his bone and all that," he said. The principal of the school then took him into the office and called paramedics.
The teen's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
A female student at the school said she's not surprised about the violence because the neighbourhood is a rough one.
"I'm not shocked at all," she said.
Concerned parents gathered outside the school waiting for news. "My son is inside there so I'm upset," one mother said, fighting back tears. "We need safety here."
The school's lockdown order ended at 12:35 p.m.
