The woman accused of fatally stabbing a newlywed in the underground PATH system appeared in court on Friday, to face second-degree murder charges.

Rohinie Bisesar, 40, is accused of killing 28-year-old Rosemarie "Kim" Junor in an unprovoked attack at a Shoppers Drug Mart in the downtown PATH system, on Dec. 11.

Junor was stabbed multiple times in the attack, and later died of her injuries.

Police have said they believe the stabbing was "random," and that the victim and the attacker were not known to one another.

Bisesar is currently in custody and has not applied for bail.

Her lawyer, Calvin Barry, says he has had difficulty interacting with his client, due to a labour disruption at the jail where she is being held.

"Because of this work-to-rule jail strike, that's going to cause some problems," he told reporters outside the courthouse. "It's going to make it very difficult for everybody in the province to be able to see their clients and people that are languishing in custody on allegations."

The union for jail guards and probation officers will be in a legal strike position at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

Barry said the judge recommended Bisesar make her next court appearance by video link, because of the potential for a labour disruption.

Bisesar's next date in court is scheduled for Jan. 20.
