A 33-year-old Kitchener man is dead after being trapped for nearly two hours following a partial roof collapse at a Mississauga construction site Monday morning.
The roof was being lowered onto the structure at the Sheridan Centre construction site when it collapsed at around 11 a.m., pinning the man underneath.
Emergency crews used airbags to slowly lift the structure off the man, however he was pronounced dead upon being freed.
It is not known whether the man was alive as crews worked to rescue him.
“We had to assess the area to make sure it was safe for the firefighters and then once we were sure that the scene was safe it was a slow process to position airbags and cribbing to move the material while maintaining the safety of our workers,” Mississauga Fire Services Platoon Chief Mike Corcoran told reporters at the scene.
According to a spokesperson for PCL, the man was an employee of Vixman Steel, which had been subcontracted to do work on the site.
The Ministry of Labour has been called in to investigate.
It is not yet known what caused the scaffolding to collapse.
