A young man was dumped on the street and left for dead after being shot in the neck on Tuesday night, Toronto police say.

Police said he was without identification when he was found.

Authorities were alerted to the situation from a 911 caller who claimed the 22-year-old man was hit by a car on Jane Street, near Wilson Avenue.

When paramedics arrived at the scene at around 8:30 p.m. they found him unconscious, bleeding from the neck with bullet wounds.

He was resuscitated and rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre but he is not expected to live, police told the Toronto Star.

Forensic identification officers were at the scene through the night collecting evidence.
