Police are investigating whether two separate shootings in a North York housing complex are connected after a man was sent to hospital Friday night with gunshot wounds.
Authorities were called to a townhouse complex on Sheppard Avenue near Jane Street just after 10 p.m. on Friday night after reports of gunfire.
They scoured the area for information and found four shell casings. They couldn't find any shooting victims until a man checked himself into Humber River Regional Hospital.
The 25-year-old man was shot twice but suffered non-life threatening injuries. He remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.
In an initial interview, he told police he was sitting in his car in the housing complex when three suspects approached his vehicle and started firing.
Police still must interview the man again before they can determine if his shooting is related to one that took place in the same area Wednesday morning, Staff Sgt. Ken Boyle told CTV.ca.
Boyle said he couldn't confirm whether or not the victim's name came up during Wednesday's shooting investigation.
On Wednesday, police received reports of gunfire being exchanged at around 8 a.m. Schools in the area went into lockdown for about two hours.
Nobody was hurt and one suspect was soon arrested.
Police are also investigating whether the shootings are related to a kidnapping of a 15-year-old girl in the same area this week.
The girl was held against her will and beaten for information on the whereabouts of her cousin before she managed to escape.
Boyle said her cousin was involved in an altercation but could not confirm if he is a suspect in either of the shootings that took place this week.
He also said in light of the violence, police have stepped up their patrols in the area.
"We're always concerned (about escalating violence)," he said. "We're increasing our patrol in the area 24 hours a day."
Police hope the public will be able to help them identify suspects in both shooting incidents. Anyone with information can call 31 Division detectives at 416-808-3100 or can leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers, 416-222-TIPS.
