The Toronto Transit Commission will scrap the free parking perk enjoyed by Metropass holders starting next year.
The TTC board vote, which took place Wednesday night, means commuters who hold a Metropass will no longer be able to park for free at TTC lots.
The cost of parking is expected to range from between $2.00 and $6.00 per day.
City councillor and TTC Commissioner Suzan Hall says the increase in costs to commuters will be "substantial."
"This is going to come as a big shock," Hall said.
About 10,000 Metropass users are estimated to use the lots, but the TTC says they are losing millions of dollars maintaining them.
TTC chair Adam Giambrone told CTV News Wednesday the lots are simply too expensive and the money can be better spent on new services.
"What we're looking to do is use the money that we're currently spending on our parking lots to improve bus service," Giambrone said.
He adds that it is unfair that all TTC riders are paying to subsidize a service used by only a small number of commuters.
