The TTC was expected to vote Wednesday on whether to cut the free parking perk enjoyed by Metropass holders at commuter lots.

About 10,000 Metropass users are estimated to use the lots, but the TTC says they are losing millions of dollars maintaining them.

TTC chair Adam Giambrone told CTV News the lots are simply too expensive and the money can be better spent on new services.

"What we're looking to do is use the money that we're currently spending on our parking lots to improve bus service," Giambrone said.

He adds that it is unfair that all TTC riders are paying to subsidize a service used by only a small number of commuters.

But some critics say forcing drivers to pay for parking could double fees for those commuters.

If the commission votes in favour of charging for commuter lots, the cost of parking is expected to vary from $2.00 to $6.00.

Any parking changes are not expected to take effect until next year.
