Toronto Mayor John Tory will present rapper Drake with a key to "the Six" on Friday.
Tory made the announcement on social media Thursday afternoon, saying the key is the "highest honour we can give."
In a video posted to Twitter, Tory said he believes the key to the city should be given to those who make residents feel good about themselves and Toronto.
"I want these moments to inspire us as a city, and send a real message: Toronto can do great things," he said.
In a series of tweets, Tory said he had met with Drake recently, and talked to him about the rapper's desire to build Toronto's music scene. Drake also talked about inspiring youth and helping to address social issues felt across the city.
Tory will give Drake the key on Friday night, as NBA All-Star weekend begins. The event will be attended by NBA stars and celebrities.
Previous recipients of the key include the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Margaret Atwood and Celine Dion. Former Toronto Blue Jays CEO Paul Beeston will be presented with a key in the spring.
Tomorrow I’ll give out the Key to the City. This is why. @Drakehttps://t.co/dfdIVQW3yk
