It was a wild weekend on Ontario roads as police charged 163 people with street racing including one teen who was clocked doing 239 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
The 17-year-old Barrie resident was charged by the Ontario Provincial Police at 1:50 a.m. Monday after they spotted a Lincoln LLS travelling north on Highway 26.
Police say four other teens -- all under the age of 18 -- were in the car at the time.
According to OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley, most of the charges laid over the weekend were laid against young men in their early 20s or late teens.
Under the province's street racing laws, any driver caught going 50 kilometres over the posted speed limit will automatically have their car impounded and have their driver's licence suspended for seven days. They also will face a minimum fine of $2,000.
About 300 accidents were reported in the GTA over the long weekend and police say eight people died on the road. None of the traffic fatalities occurred in the GTA.
OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino said police did not see a spike in incidents this year because of a heavier police presence.
"We're far more visible, far more aggressive and far more able to enforce," Fantino told the Toronto Star.
