Speed is being blamed for a six-car pile-up that killed two people and sent eight others to Toronto-area hospitals.

The crash occurred at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night on Eglinton Avenue, just east of Wynford Drive.

A white Honda Accord was travelling west when it went out of control and jumped the median, crossing into the path of oncoming traffic. The car struck a Bell Canada utility van that was heading east.

Three people were thrown from the Accord as it flipped over, police said.

The crash caused four other cars to collide, spreading the wreckage across six lanes.

Two of the victims, 18-year-Fizza Rizvi and 20-year-old Rehan Tanvir, died in hospital overnight. They were both passengers in the Honda.

The Tanvirs came to Canada from Pakistan four years ago for a better life and more opportunities for their children.

"He loved everyone. He was a very humble and decent guy," Tanvir's father Asif told CTV Toronto.

Asif said his son was interested in computers and planned to attend Humber College for graphic arts.

Two victims remain in serious condition. Six other people sustained minor injuries in the horrific crash.

Authorities believe the Honda was travelling at about 120 kilometres per hour. The stretch of Eglinton Avenue where the accident occurred has a speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour.

The area was closed for hours as police surveyed the scene.

Rehan Riaz, a 21-year-old Toronto resident, has been charged with two counts each of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. He appeared briefly in a Toronto courtroom.
