The man charged with first-degree murder in the death of a Toronto police sergeant has been released from hospital and is being held in custody at a Toronto-area detention centre.

Richard Kachkar, 44, was released on Monday from St. Michael's Hospital where he was recovering from gunshots suffered when he was arrested last week.

He has been taken to Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton, Ont., where he will be held until his next court appearance.

Sgt. Ryan Russell, 35, was killed on the morning of Jan. 12, when a stolen snowplow struck him near the intersection of Avenue and Davenport Roads.

Kachkar has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Meanwhile, thousands are expected to attend a funeral for Russell in downtown Toronto Tuesday afternoon.
