TORONTO - Premier Dalton McGuinty says no decision has been made to privatize parts of Ontario's electricity, lottery and liquor corporations.
McGuinty admits his government is considering ways to sell portions of Hydro One, Ontario Power Generation, Ontario Lottery and Gaming and the Liquor Control Board to raise money.
He says the cash-strapped province, which has a deficit of almost $20 billion this year, must consider ways to pay for improvements to health, education and other government programs.
McGuinty calls it "a big step," and says if the Liberal government does take it, it won't take it lightly.
The opposition parties -- and organized labour -- are raising alarm bells about creating a so-called SuperCorp to oversee the portion of the electricity, liquor and lottery assets that would be sold off.
Progressive Conservative critic John O'Toole calls the SuperCorp a distraction from the HST, and a "desperation move" by a government that's run out of ways to raise money.
