The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate after a man was shot by Peel Police in Brampton Friday evening.

According to the SIU, police were investigating a vehicle in the driveway of a home on Velvet Grass Lane. When the driver tried to flee in the vehicle at least one officer shot at the car.

The male driver was arrested and taken to Brampton Civic Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his upper body.

The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the incident.

The SIU is called when there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault involving the police.
