The province’s police watchdog is investigating after two people were injured in a collision with a Peel Regional Police cruiser in Brampton early Sunday.

The vehicles collided at Main Street North and Williams Parkway around 5:45 a.m. Peel Regional Paramedic Service said.

Two people from the civilian vehicle were taken to hospital in serious condition, paramedics said. The officer sustained minor injuries and was not transported to hospital.

Images from the scene appeared to show five large kegs or metal drums in the back of the civilian vehicle, though it wasn’t clear whether there was anything in them or if they played any part in the collision.

The Peel Police Major Collision Bureau is at the scene and area roads are expected to be shut down for several hours.

The Special Investigations Unit, which looks into any incident where police are involved in a death or serious injury, confirmed Sunday that it has taken over the investigation.
