Several people have been taken to hospital after an out-of-control dump truck barrelled down a northeast Toronto street and slammed into more than a dozen vehicles during the morning rush on Wednesday.
The truck was travelling west on Eglinton Avenue at about 8:50 a.m. when it suddenly lost control, struck several vehicles, swerved into oncoming traffic and hit several eastbound cars, police said.
The truck then mounted a curb and struck a BMW parked at a dealership near Victoria Park before it came to a stop. In total, 14 vehicles were struck.
Police said as many as five people were taken to hospital, but all injuries were considered minor.
One motorist said the scene was frightening.
"I saw (the truck) in my rearview mirror. He was just barrelling down the centre of the lane, and the next thing I know there's a puff of smoke and then a 'bang, bang, bang' -- all the cars being plowed through," Frank said.
"I'm glad to be alive. I'm surprised that truck that size, how much damage it can do."
A female driver whose vehicle was struck also said she was lucky to escape serious harm.
"I was a little bit shaky and I felt a bump on my head, but then I got out and got a little bit of fresh air and I'm feeling better right now," she said.
The first officer on scene said the trail of destruction was unbelievable.
"When I first came on scene, I definitely thought we would have had something a lot more serious than we did," said Sgt. Claudia Thomas.
The driver of the truck was taken to hospital to be examined. The extent of his injuries was not clear.
Police closed the stretch of Eglinton to clean up the mess and investigate what caused the truck to lose control.
