Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has been named in a statement of claim alleging he was behind a 2012 jailhouse assault, Ford’s lawyer confirmed Wednesday.
Lawyer Dennis Morris told reporters at city hall that Scott MacIntyre, the ex-partner of Ford’s sister Kathy, has filed a statement of claim alleging Ford was behind an attack that took place at the Toronto West Detention Centre in March 2012.
According to a Globe and Mail article in which MacIntyre was interviewed, the lawsuit alleges the violent attack that left MacIntyre with a broken leg was intended to keep him quiet about Ford’s apparent substance abuse problems.
The suit also names Ontario's Ministry of Correctional Services.
Morris told reporters Wednesday that the allegations are “irresponsible and spurious.”
He said he had not discussed the allegations in detail with the mayor, who has been in council chambers all day debating the budget.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
