Toronto police canvassed a North York community on Saturday in search of witnesses in connection with the slaying of a mentally ill man. Officers also handed out flyers.
Officers set up a command post in the parking lot of St. Stephen Anglican Church, on Jane Street near Wilson Avenue, hoping residents would come forward with information in the death of 22-year-old Shawn McLean.
Police found McLean unconscious and bleeding from a gunshot wound to the neck on Tuesday night on Jane Street, near Chalkfarm Drive. McLean succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Friday night. Police believe he was dumped on the street and left for dead.
Investigators are baffled as to why McLean was attacked. Police said he had no criminal record or ties to gangs or drugs.
Det. Sgt. Brian Borg told reporters on Saturday police would like to speak with two men who appeared to be with McLean just before an off-duty TTC supervisor found the victim. The men are considered witnesses, not suspects.
McLean had been at the North York Sheridan Mall before he was shot on Tuesday and was captured on a security camera. Police released photos of the victim in an attempt to find anyone who may have seen him. He was last seen walking to his mother's home.
McLean is the city's fourth homicide victim of the year and the third killed by gunfire.
Anyone with information on McLean or his whereabouts on Tuesday is asked to contact police at 416-808-7400, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or go online at www.222tips.com.
