York Regional Police homicide investigators are appealing to the public for help after the dismembered remains of a missing man were found late last month.
Police released an image of Peter Gavin, 67, on Friday with the hope that someone would remember seeing the man prior to his death.
Gavin's skull was discovered Aug. 27 near Warden Avenue and St. John's Sideroad in Whitechurch-Stouffville, about 20 kilometres south of where he lived by himself.
Gavin was reported missing Aug. 24 by a friend, although police believe he had been missing for about two months.
"The condition of the remains, we believe a significant time had passed," Sgt. Larry Wilson of the York Regional Police told CTV Toronto.
Gavin's neighbour, Laurine Kellington, told CTV Toronto she rarely saw the 67-year-old.
"He semed like quite a friendly guy but we didn't see much, that's about all I know about him," Kellington said.
Gavin was a retired CN worker and farmer who lived in East Gwillimbury for 40 years. Police consider his death a homicide.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police Homicide Unit at 1-866-287-5025, ext. 7865, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
