Investigators plan to spend Tuesday searching for leads in a rural part of York Region where human remains were found over the weekend.

More than a dozen York Regional Police officers are on the scene as investigators work to identify a human skull found near Warden Avenue and Aurora Road in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

The identity and gender of the deceased has not yet been determined, but police hope to find more clues that will help them identify the remains and the cause of death.

York Regional Police told CTVToronto.ca that the search will likely span several square kilometres in the area near Aurora, Ont.

Several people are missing from the area, including a resident from a group home who wandered from the home in May.
