Toronto police say they've located a man with a history of extreme violence who walked away from a downtown hospital on Monday.

George May, 51, was found not criminally responsible for a woman's 2001 death due to his mental illness. The victim, Beverley Sims, was found strangled to death at a rooming house for psychiatric outpatients.

May has been living at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health on Queen Street West. He was arrested in Toronto's 53 Division -- which includes Rosedale, Thorncliffe Park, Bridle Path and Forest Hill -- and arrested under the mental health act, police said.

He had been last seen on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Bathurst Street and Dundas Street West area. At the time, police warned members of the public against approaching him.
