A pedestrian was hit by a car Monday afternoon as the driver tried to swerve out of the way of an approaching ambulance.

The driver of a red Honda was travelling westbound on Carlton Street and was about to turn southbound at Jarvis Street when she noticed an oncoming ambulance.

To avoid the emergency vehicle, she decided to make a wide turn but lost control of the car and ended up mounting a curb instead, hitting a male pedestrian and dragging him to the other side of the street.

An eyewitness told CTV Toronto the car carried the pedestrian for a long distance.

"Her bumper, if she had one, picked him up brought him across the street and then when she made a slight swerve he flew off," said Kristian Stefamson.

The pedestrian is currently in hospital with serious injuries. The driver was taken to St. Michael's Hospital with minor injuries.

Police closed down the intersection for most of the afternoon as they investigated the crash.
