TORONTO - Opposition critics are calling on the Ontario government to scrap the current system used to inspect propane facilities and come up with a safer plan.
New Democrat Andrea Horwath says the only way to avoid disasters such as the Sunrise Propane explosion is to abandon the current system of self-regulation.
She also wants the government to dismantle the arm's-length agency which monitors propane facilities and bring safety inspections back under government control.
The Technical Standards and Safety Authority was heavily criticized after the August 10th explosion.
The opposition went on the attack after the McGuinty Liberals hired two independent experts -- at the cost of a quarter million dollars -- to review propane safety standards.
Consumer Affairs Minister Harinder Takhar says the independent review will examine all aspects of propane regulation and compare them to accepted practices around the world.
