Smugglers injected opium into shipments of pickles, cherries and other everyday items as part of a multi-million dollar drug operation with origins in Iran, Toronto police say.

Officers revealed the details of the drug bust Thursday, following a year-long probe that has also led to nine arrests and a total of 78 charges.

Officers said that three more people were still being sought in the case.

The drugs were found in marine and air cargo shipments heading to Canada.

Police said that ephedrine, which is used in the production of crystal meth, was placed into bath towels.

Toronto police, working with forces in York, Peel and the Canada Border Services Agency, have also seized cash and vehicles.

One man in the case appeared in a Toronto court on Thursday morning.

Officers estimate that more than $20 million in drugs and merchandise was seized.
