TORONTO - Premier Dalton McGuinty says Ontario will not follow B.C.'s lead in directing all revenues from the harmonized sales tax into health care.
British Columbia said Tuesday that it will use the money generated by the unpopular tax to help fund rising health-care costs.
But McGuinty says Ontario -- the only other province moving to merge sales taxes this July -- isn't prepared to make that commitment.
McGuinty says his government is introducing its own measures to offset the impact of the HST, but isn't prepared to make a call about how specific revenues will be allocated.
He says what's needed is a broader conversation about the future and reliability of health care to ensure services are available for an aging population.
He adds that while health care is a big concern for people, so are schools, the environment and the economy -- and all those needs must be considered.
