A Mississauga, Ont. father is $20 million richer after winning the Lotto 6/49 jackpot in a mid-October draw.
Velauthan Vamadevan, a father of three, told Lotto 6/49 he's been playing the lottery for 20 years.
"I never expected it," the 62-year-old said. "I never thought I would win."
Vamadevan, a real estate agent, said he bought his ticket just hours before the Oct. 18 draw.
"It was my son's birthday and I decided to give it a shot."
When he got home, he put his ticket on a shelf and forgot about it. A few days later, he heard that the winner was from Mississauga and checked the tickets in his wallet. His numbers didn't match.
"What a lucky guy," he said he thought to himself, thinking another Mississauga resident had won.
Last Tuesday, Vamadevan found the ticket he'd left on a shelf, and checked his numbers on a whim.
"I was speechless," Vamadevan said. He called his wife, who didn't believe him. Neither did his children.
Vamadevan isn’t sure what he'll do with the money yet.
"It is a miracle this has happened after 30 years of being in Canada. I'm still shocked."
