Hundreds of people are running from Toronto to Ottawa on Thursday in honour of police officers who have died on the job.

The National Peace Officers' Memorial "Run to Remember" got off to an early start at Queen's Park, Thursday morning. The three-day event will finish on Parliament Hill, just in time to attend the Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial in Ottawa on Sunday

The wife of Peel Regional Police Const. Artem Ochakovsky, who was killed in a car crash last year, led some 200 participants to kick the marathon off.

"It's so overpowering the support that you have, with not just your own police department but with all the police departments," Erin Ochakovsky said. "It's amazing to even see this."

Ochakovsky, who was planning to run the first five-kilometre leg of the marathon, was accompanied by her son Owen, in his stroller.

While many participants were running five-kilometre legs, others were planning on running the entire 460 kilometres over the next three days.

"This is going to be a run to remember," Dan Demitroff told CTV News. "While we are here to have a good time, it is something that is in the back of our mind all the time; the officers who have sacrificed our lives. That is why we are here.
